Jungle Cruise Reviews: Dwayne Johnson-starrer is an old-fashioned, fun family entertainer

Disney’s Jungle Cruise, inspired by the theme park ride of the same name, takes a typically family-friendly approach. It is a fantasy adventure story involving conquistadors, adventurers, ancient curses, and flowers with magical healing abilities.

Johnson does the job as a typical knave-at-first-glance-but-good-at-heart protagonist that populates such stories. But the real star has to be Blunt. The character is written well, and she brings a lot of heart and humor to the role. To the writers’ credit, they give Lily a lot to do, which is not always the case with female characters in similar movies.

Even Keira Knightley’s Elizabeth Swann, who was considered a radical departure then for a female protagonist in a movie set in the early 18th century, does not appear all that much progressive in hindsight when compared to Lily.

Whitehall, who became famous after leading the cast of the British sitcom Fresh Meat, is predictably great here. The villain Prince Joachim, played by Jesse Plemons, is cartoonish, but in an entertaining way. This all works because Jungle Cruise does not take itself too seriously.

That’s it. Jungle Cruise is by no means a perfect movie. It has a few flaws that stop me from giving a wholehearted recommendation. But it is a fun, campy movie you can enjoy with the family and a diverting throwback to the 80s and 90s adventure films.

The Tragedy of Macbeth trailer: A24, Joel Coen bring Shakespeare to Apple TV.

The Tragedy of Macbeth is based on English playwright William Shakespeare’s acclaimed Scottish play by the same name. It stars Denzel Washington as Lord Macbeth and Frances McDormand.

The official description said the film is, “A work of stark chiaroscuro and incantatory rage”. That nods to both the visuals and aspect ratios of Laurence Olivier’s Shakespeare adaptations as well as Akira Kurosawa’s “Throne of Blood”. But added that “Coen’s tale of sound and fury is entirely his own.”

The film shot in black and white and in the 4:3 aspect ratio by Coen Brothers’ long-time collaborator, Bruno Delbonnel. The film recently closed the 65th BFI London Film Festival in August. Joel had said in a statement, “Shakespeare belongs to the world but comes from Britain.

Joel has previously co-directed films with his brother Ethan. This is the first time that he has worked on a film on his own. Together with the Coen Brothers, as they are known, have made classics such as Fargo, The Big Lebowski, No Country for Old Men, True Grit, Inside Llewyn Davis, and The Ballad of Buster Scruggs.

Fast & Furious 9 Maker Justin Lin Says the End of the ‘Fast’ Saga Is “One Chapter in Two Movies”

Justin Lin’s got a lot to celebrate and enjoy right now with the success of F9: The Fast Saga. It was recently announced that the next installment in the main saga, Fast and Furious 10, will make its way into theaters in the Spring of 2023, with Vin Diesel revealing that filming will begin in January of 2022.

While we don’t have a release date for the final film, Fast and Furious 11. Tyrese Gibson did reveal that the plan is to shoot these last two installments back to back. While I’d like to bet Lin and the folks at Universal know what they’re doing with this hugely successful franchise. Filming two massive blockbusters, one after the next is bound to feel like a bit of a marathon for Lin and the Fast family

While celebrating the digital and Blu-ray release of the F9 director’s cut, I got the chance to catch up with Lin and asked him about the potential challenges that could come with filming Fast 10 and 11 back to back. He began:

“There’s an ambition of what we want to do and there are also real-world issues that we’re encountering. But I feel like, for me, I don’t want to be greedy. I want to do what’s best for the process.”

Lin also took a moment to emphasize the importance of the story structure. They’re rolling with for these final two films. Fast and Furious 10 and 11 won’t be two separate stories, but rather, one chapter told over the course of two films. Here’s how Lin put it:

“The idea of the last chapter being two films is correct. I have to say, I’m so glad — because I think when I first entered this franchise, a sequel was not a given. You had to earn it, you know? And so to be sitting here talking to you and go, ‘Oh yeah, there’s gonna be two more movies!’ I’m like, ‘Wow.’ It means a lot. So, every day when I wake up, I’m trying to reconfigure and make sure hopefully whatever we’re talking about process wise is gonna yield the best result. But I think having one chapter in two movies is correct. That’s where I sit today.”

The F9 director’s cut will be available to own on digital, Blu-ray, and 4K UHD on September 21st.

‘7 Prisoners’ (‘7 Prisioneiros’): Film Review.

7 Prisoners, the second feature from Brazilian American filmmaker Alexandre Moratto and set for release on Netflix in November. An aching coming-of-age story wrapped in a harrowing examination of human trafficking in Brazil. It is a truth that for many capitalisms degrades the experience of living. Forcing people to make undignified decisions in order to meet basic needs. Survival becomes an individual pursuit, and everyone loses. Through a pointed script and propulsive storytelling. Moratto smartly makes the stakes of living within such a perverse system clear.

Tucked in the verdant hills of rural Brazil sits a humble house with a tin roof. A young man hammers a piece of wood onto a structure, his brown skin glistening under the oppressive heat of the sun. His family — a graying mother, two siblings — toil away, preparing a final meal for him. Later that day, the boy will leave his quiet home for the loud, chaotic streets of São Paulo. Along with three other boys, he will work at a metal shop. They’ll send money home to their families, and, once they have made enough, done enough, they will return and tend to their own dreams. Or so they believe.

Ryan Reynolds on playing a ‘4-year-old adult’ in Free Guy:

Ryan Reynolds is a non-player character in a fictional video game in Shawn Levi’s Free Guy. The video game, called Free City, is a blend of GTA and Fortnite in which human players share the world.

Ryan’s character, called Guy, is a bank teller. Whose job is just to lie down and converse with his buddy when players arrive to rob the bank.

The movie’s plot kicks in when Guy gains consciousness and becomes aware of his NPC status. What he gets is an existential crisis of the strangest kind.

For Reynolds, best known for playing Deadpool, the character is a nice palate cleanser. He said in a press conference about the movie, “There’s a movie that I love called Being There starring Peter Sellers.

I had the first foothold into this character and this world. And there’s something really wonderful about playing a character who’s kind of naive and innocent. And in the movie, he’s in a sense a four-year-old adult.”

He added, “It was really fun exploring everything with new eyes, which is what this character gets to do, and sort of filtering that through the prism of comedy and occasional cynicism.

The official synopsis of Free Guy reads, “Ryan Reynolds stars as a bank teller who discovers he is actually a background player in an open-world video game. And decides to become the hero of his own story—one he rewrites himself. Now in a world where there are no limits, he is determined to be the guy who saves his world his way, before it is too late.”
