“The First Emperor” Reappearance Roadshow by MASATO HARA

Masato Hara made “The First Emperor” on 8mm and 16mm films in 1973 and made a major impact on the Japanese film industry. Even today he impresses numerous filmmakers with his creations. Unfortunately, the fire burned his house and filmography including the legendary film “The First Emperor” ….

But, with the help of crowdfunding and Kyoto City, his team reprinted and remastered “The First Emperor”! Witness the resurrected remastered version and the film left unburned by the fire.

Masato Hara’s comment
When I was in high school, I made a film with my friends because I loved movies and wanted to make a film. The film won the Grand Prix at the Film Art Festival Tokyo. But I felt it was a bit like a movie made by an honored student.

A few years later, I explored the kind of film I wanted to make and made “The First Emperor”. I wandered from Kyoto, Hokkaido, and Kyushu in search of the emperor who created the country.

Japan appeared gradually in the process of shooting. Finally, in Kagoshima, I met a girl who committed suicide after making her first film. I mourned the girl, believed in the power of the film, and ended my film there.

“The First Emperor” is a film that contains all of my encounters in film and my passion for film. It was a very painful experience when my films had burned out in a fire. I am really happy to be able to reprint“The First Emperor”.

“The First Emperor” will be streaming in January and March with ENGLISH SUBTITLES.

Actor Karen Gillan is excited to reprise her Guardians of the Galaxy role in the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe project Thor: Love and Thunder.

The Scottish actor, who has played intergalactic warrior Nebula in two Guardians of the Galaxy movies as well as Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, confirmed her casting in the fourth Thor film.

The fan had asked if she had cut her hair to prepare for Nebula and she responded with a “yes”.

“Cut (her hair) the other day in preparation for Nebula so that we don’t have to, like, get so much hair into the bald cap, because I have so much hair it’s unbelievable like it’s just so thick,” she said.

Filmmaker Taika Waititi is directing the upcoming fourth installment, which marks Australian star Chris Hemsworth’s return as the nominal superhero.

Actors Natalie Portman and Tessa Thompson are reprising their roles of Jane Foster and Valkyrie, respectively.

Hollywood star Christian Bale, Jaimie Alexander, and Matt Damon are also part of the cast along with Chris Pratt appearing as his Guardian of the Galaxy character Star-Lord.

Thor: Love and Thunder is scheduled to be released on May 6, 2022

Happy Cleaners by Julian Kim and Peter S. Lee, releasing soon.

koreanamericanstory.org produced, “Happy Cleaners” will be released on February 5, 2021, in theatres and VOD. The film is the first feature one of the Kim & Lee duo, although they both worked on the “Flushing” web series. It’s an NGO that promotes the visibility of Korean American stories.

The story revolves around a Spanish family who migrated to South Africa.

“Happy Cleaners,” tells the story of a Korean American family living in Flushing, New York. The Choi parents run a dry-cleaning shop. Business is hard, but it gets even more complicated when the new landlord refuses to renew their lease.

The couple has two children. The older sister, Hyunny is working at the hospital, supporting the family and navigating through her relationship with long-time boyfriend Danny. Her brother, Kevin, wants to put college behind – very much to his parents’ despair – and move to Los Angeles.

In terms of representation, the feature is interesting: it gives voices to a screen minority. It is also noteworthy that a lot of the cast and crew, and people working in post-production were Asian Americans.

However, by wishing to be broad and cover as many themes as possible (blue collars, the American dream, racism, complex relationship to one’s roots, parental pressure, parental sacrifice, etc.) the story sometimes loses itself, loses the nuances of characters, and can become a bit cliché.

Some dialogues are very explanatory of how characters feel when it is also nice for the viewers to understand it by themselves. The long dialogues in the movie are meant to be a tribute to 90’s K-dramas. This would also have added a bit of humor to the film.

Filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar triumphs at Spain’s Goya Awards

The internationally acclaimed Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar was the winner at Saturday in Goya Awards with his semi-autobiographical film Pain and Glory, taking home seven of the 16 prizes it was nominated for.

Pain and Glory won the desired prize for Best Film at the 34th edition of the Goya Awards, the Spanish movie industry’s equivalent of the Oscars. Almodóvar was named Best Director, Antonio Banderas Best Lead Actor, and Julieta Serrano Best Supporting Actress. The movie also won the Goya for Best Musical Score and Best Original Script.

Undoubtedly, the entire ceremony, which was held at the Martín Carpena sports arena in Málaga, was something of a tribute to Almodóvar. Actors Penélope Cruz and Ángela Molina, who has appeared regularly in Almodóvar’s films, awarded the filmmaker with the Goya for Best Director.

This year marked the first time Banderas had won a competitive Goya – he received an honorary award in 2015 – after being nominated on five occasions. The actor was visibly emotional as he accepted the award, and was given a standing ovation from the more than 3,200-strong audience, the largest number in the history of the Goya Awards.

Almodóvar used his acceptance speech to send a message to Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez of the Socialist Party (PSOE), “In the next four years, you are going to be the co-author of a script” of all Spaniards, said the director. “I hope things go well for you because that way things will go well for the rest of us.”

Pain and Glory are also nominated for an Oscar in the category of Best International Feature Film. On the red carpet on Saturday, Almodóvar let slip that Penélope Cruz will be co-presenting the statuette at the Academy Awards. Cruz and Banderas presented Almodóvar with an Oscar in 1999 for his film All About My Mother.

Tom Holland recalls ‘terrible’ Marvel audition process for Spider-Man

Actor Tom Holland thought he’d be fired from the Marvel Cinematic Universe after making his debut as Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War. He said that there was a period when he didn’t hear from anyone about his future in the franchise and wasn’t sure he’d be invited back.

The actor makes the declaration in the latest installment of Variety’s Actors on Actors series. He was in conversation with Daniel Kaluuya.

He said, “From the moment of shooting Civil War to Spider-Man: Homecoming, I was persuaded that they were going to fire me. I don’t know why. Civil War hadn’t come out yet, and I just didn’t hear anything from anyone. I can’t really explain it. It was dreadful, but they didn’t — obviously. It’s been crazy, mate. I’ve loved every minute of it.”

Holland redeems his role as Spider-Man in two solo films and two Avengers films. He is currently shooting for the third Spider-Man movie.

He also recalled the ‘terrible’ audition process for the role, which lasted seven months and cover six rounds, culminating with a screen test opposite Robert Downey Jr.

“They always tell you that you did a great job and they will be in touch, and then six weeks go by and you’re just waiting and waiting,” Holland said.

After that, he was called in for another audition with Chris Evans. He said that he learned that he landed the job along with the rest of the world when he read an article confirming it.
